I love using special sleep diffuser blends at bedtime.
I used to wake up all night long and struggle to fall back asleep again. It felt like I was always falling asleep on my feet, and with two kiddos to keep up with, I can’t afford to be a walking sleep zombie.
Whether it’s to fall asleep faster, sleep more soundly, or breathe easier while I sleep, essential oils are one of my favorite tools for getting the job done.
Best single oils for sleep
I have a whole other post on the 10 best essential oils for sleep (and how to use them), but here’s a quick summary. The sleep diffuser blends that follow are largely combinations of these single oils.
- Lavender: the classic calming oil
- Vetiver: an emotionally calming stress reducer
- Roman chamomile: like a soothing cup of tea to help you wind down
- Cedarwood: stimulates your brain’s melatonin production
- Valerian: used for centuries as a sleep aid
- Ylang ylang: calming to help you fall asleep faster
- Bergamot: calming and relaxing
- Sandalwood: emotionally balancing and stimulates melatonin production
- Marjoram: eases emotional stress
- Frankincense: calming, spiritually and emotionally balancing
Note that I’m a huge advocate for using pure, unadulterated essential oils if you’re going to be using them for any kind of therapeutic use (like for better sleep).
How to use sleep diffuser blends
I recommend picking several recipes and cycling through them. Or try them all! You could get through an entire month before using the same recipe twice.
If you use too much of a particular oil too frequently, your body could become desensitized to it, and it could stop working as well for you. So I always pick a few oils or blends for similar effects rather than using the same one all the time.
You may find a few that work better for you than others, so it’s fine to stick with those. But be sure that you’re still getting some variety.

- 6 drops Peace & Calming
Peace & Calming is a blend of ylang ylang, orange, tangerine, patchouli, and blue tansy and is great for bedtime.
Blend #22
- 6 drops Stress Away
Stress Away is my go-to “make my brain stop talking” sleep diffuser blend. It contains copaiba, lime, cedarwood, vanilla, ocotea, and lavender.
Blend #23
- 6 drops Rutavala
Rutavala blends ruta, valerian, and lavender and is very relaxing and calming. Note: don’t use this one if you’re pregnant.
Best “Blend Bump” Sleep Diffuser Blends
A “blend bump” involves “bumping up” a pre-made blend. You can either add an oil that’s not already in the blend or increase the concentration of an oil that the blend contains.
Again, these sleep diffuser blends use Young Living pre-made blends as a base.
